Ja'Marr Chase is looking to become the new highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL. Related to that, Chase is "holding in" for Bengals training camp and the 2024 preseason, skipping practices as he did during OTAs earlier in the offseason.Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson, drafted No. 22 overall in the 2020 first round, reset the market for the position this summer with a four-year, $140 million contract that averages a league-high $35 million a season and includes $110 million guaranteed.Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, drafted five spots ahead of Jefferson in 2020, just got his own ma sive deal. Lamb's new four-year deal in Dallas is just shy of Jefferson's with a total value of $134 million, a $34 million average and $100 million guaranteed.Jefferson and Lamb stood out from several other wide receivers who got lucrative extensions, including the Eagles' A.J. Brown and the Lions' Amon-Ra St. Brown. Chase has made his case, however, to clear the new highest bar.Chase has been very productive since his rookie season much like Jefferson, his former LSU teammate while playing with Joe Burrow, another former LSU teammate. In 45 career regular-season games, Chase has posted 268 catches for 3,717 yards and 29 TDs. He also has added 45 catches for 588 yards and three TDs in seven career playoff games.Everything points to Chase being the new highest-paid wide receiver in the league. That has averaged to $7 Odell Beckham Jr. Jersey .7 million per year, and in his fourth season in 2024, Chase is making $9.8 million of his total contract value.The Bengals have picked up Chase's option for 2025, which would pay him $21.8 million for next season. Chase will turn 25 next March. They all are elite contemporaries who have "griddied" their way to deserving the most green at the position, but Chase has the benefit of being the highest pick from a more recent draft.Chase likely won't become the NFL's first $40 million per year wide receiver, but he should clear what Jefferson and Lamb got as the league's salary cap continues to expand in 2025.Like Jefferson, Chase should look to be extended for four years, at least through 2029. If that's the case, a total contract value of $144 million would make sense, to meet the average of $36 million per season. Jefferson became the first wide receiver to clear $100 million in practical guarantees. Lamb joined him in that elite company while Chase will jump Jefferson.DOMINATE YOUR DRAFT: It was in Chase's best interest to wait until the Cowboys and Lamb agree on his new contract. Now he can make sure his maxes out his guaranteed money. The Bengals also want that time, as they are paying wide receiver Tee Higgins $21.8 million on the franchise tag this season.Chase can rest a sured the Bengals will be motivated when the calendar flips because it will help them know what they can do about keeping Higgins, too.Along with the $144 million over four years, it would make sense for the Bengals to give Chase up to $120 million guaranteed. Jefferson can enjoy his time as the king of wide receiver salaries and Lamb is the crown prince. But Chase will royally top them both to keep raising the ceiling for the position. Ben Skowronek Jersey
