What Athletes Say When Protein Shakes Get Replaced by a Shot

That’s the picture VKTRY Protein paints, and TRUBAR founder Brad Pyatt built the brand around it. The athletes quoted on the brand’s site tell the story best.

Picture a CrossFit gym at 6 AM. Chalk in the air, a barbell crashing down, and a row of shaker bottles lined up on a shelf by the door. Somebody always forgets theirs. Somebody else borrows it. It’s a small chaos, and everyone’s used to it.

Now imagine that shelf holding tiny bottles instead. That’s the picture VKTRY Protein paints, and TRUBAR founder Brad Pyatt built the brand around it. The athletes quoted on the brand’s site tell the story best.

A Pro’s Take

The VKTRY homepage quotes Marcus Ross, listed as a pro CrossFit athlete. Paraphrasing his comment, he says it finally doesn’t taste like chemicals, and that getting 23 grams in about five seconds reshaped his routine after lifting.

That’s one voice, and it’s on the brand’s own site, so weigh it accordingly. Still, taste is the top complaint people have about protein shakes, and an athlete naming it first is telling.

Speed After the Last Set

After a hard session, nobody wants a chore. Sets are done, hands are shaking, and the mind is mostly on food. A shot you can finish quickly fits that exact moment. No measuring, no stirring, no waiting for clumps to dissolve.

Compare it with mixing from a tub in a locker room. The shot wins on effort alone, even before flavor enters the picture.

The 10,000 Athlete Claim

The homepage says more than 10,000 athletes shared VKTRY with their teammates and were not compensated. That’s a brand statement, so take it as such, but it points to word of mouth, which is how sports products usually spread. Teammates trust teammates.

It also lines up with the founder’s background. Brad Pyatt is a former NFL athlete, and the About page says he has spent nearly 20 years helping athletes perform. Sports circles are small, and reputations travel.

Official Protein of the X Games

The site also calls VKTRY the Official Protein of the X Games. Action sports athletes are constantly moving between events, and carrying a bulky shaker bag isn’t practical for a skater or a rider. A small shot fits their lives better.

That’s my reasoning, not a company claim. Still, it fits how the brand describes its audience.

Comparing the Formats

Think of Protein Shakes as the old standard. They’re familiar, and some people love them. The VKTRY shot offers 23 grams of protein, 100 calories, zero sugar and no lactose in 3.3 oz, which is a different trade. Less volume, more convenience.

The site’s chart lists about 5 seconds for the shot versus 90 seconds for a ready to drink shake and 3 minutes for a bar, and notes those times are illustrative. Use them as a rough guide, not a lab result.

Flavors That Get Picked

The four flavors are Citrus Edge, Apple Surge, Melon Rush and Berry Strike. Ross’s quote hints that nobody wants a chemical aftertaste, so flavor has clearly been a focus.

Here’s a tip: order a six pack and split it with a training partner. Ask them which flavor they’d buy again. Their answer will tell you more than any review.

Hear From the Founder

Pyatt founded MusclePharm, TRUBAR and IQ Pouch before starting VKTRY. If you’d like to hear him talk, there’s a podcast on YouTube featuring the founder. Press play on a rest day.

He’s also on record, in the press release for the GNC launch, saying VKTRY isn’t a smaller shake but a new format. That quote sums up what the athletes seem to be responding to.

Where to Get It

VKTRY Protein launched nationwide at GNC starting September 1, and a six pack is $26.99 on the brand’s website with free shipping. New mailing list signups get 10% off, the site says.

Maybe try it on a heavy day first, when the shaker feels like too much.

Closing Thought

Protein shakes will stay popular. But more athletes seem curious about simpler options, and VKTRY Protein, built by Brad Pyatt, is one clear answer.
