MMOexp Diablo 4: Challenge Dungeons are tiny boss rooms

Challenge Dungeons are tiny boss rooms that spawn randomly in the open world while you are killing monsters. They are not integrated into the Pit or other endgame systems.

This guide reviews the new seasonal content arriving in Diablo 4 Season 15, based on extensive testing on the PTR. The two new features are Challenge Dungeons and Overland Ambushes, both designed to appear during open-world gameplay. After 80 minutes of testing, the content is severely underwhelming—bosses are easily one-shot, rewards are minimal, and spawn rates are inconsistent. The development team has indicated this is placeholder content, with Diablo 4 Gold significant changes expected before the season goes live. This guide covers what works, what doesn't, and what needs improvement before launch.

Challenge Dungeons Overview

What Are Challenge Dungeons?

Challenge Dungeons are tiny boss rooms that spawn randomly in the open world while you are killing monsters. They are not integrated into the Pit or other endgame systems. The boss encounters currently feature placeholder bosses taken from random dungeons or the campaign, not unique designs.

Difficulty Scaling

The patch notes indicate these dungeons can scale up to plus three torments above your current difficulty. In practice, the scaling is much lower. Plus three torments would mathematically mean 30 monster power, but the actual scaling appears closer to one and a half torments. This means the intended challenge is significantly reduced from the start.

Boss Encounters

With the Apocalypse Warlock build, bosses are one-shot with no effort. Even on higher difficulties, the encounters are not threatening. The bosses do not compare to lair bosses, which are significantly harder than regular dungeon bosses at the same tier. Challenge Dungeon bosses are comparable to standard campaign bosses, offering no real challenge.

Rewards

The rewards are minimal and not worth the time investment. An example run on Torment 12 with plus two extra difficulty yielded almost nothing. The chests drop random low-value loot, and there is no option to choose from different chest types like Helltide or Infernal Hordes. The loot is so poor that even without a loot filter, nothing valuable appears.

Overland Ambushes Overview

What Are Overland Ambushes?

Overland Ambushes are encounters where a powerful demon ambushes you while traveling through the open world. A 30-second timer appears, and the warning states the demon has your scent. After the timer expires, the demon spawns after an additional 20-second animation.

Spawn Rate

Finding an Overland Ambush takes significantly longer than finding Challenge Dungeons. In 18 minutes of searching, only one ambush appeared. They appear to be triggered by monster kills, similar to the Visions of Enmity system from Season 3. Simply riding around on your horse does not trigger them.

Boss Encounters

The boss encountered is X'Fal, a familiar enemy that poses no threat. Despite playing one of the squishiest builds available—a Warlock with the Apocalypse build—the boss could not deal meaningful damage. The encounter lacks any sense of danger, making the 30-second warning and escape timer pointless.

Rewards

Like Challenge Dungeons, Overland Ambushes provide no valuable rewards. After defeating the boss, a two-minute buff is applied that grants immunity from demonic ambushes. This is unnecessary since the encounters are not dangerous. No special seasonal rewards, such as splinters for jewelry, were dropped during PTR testing.

Key Issues and Criticisms

Lack of Challenge

Both features are severely undertuned. The bosses are not threatening, and builds can easily one-shot them even on greater difficulties. The difficulty scaling does not match what was advertised, and the encounters do not provide the challenge expected from seasonal content.

Lack of Rewards

The rewards are not worth the time investment. Challenge Dungeons drop nothing valuable, and Overland Ambushes offer similar disappointing loot. Without meaningful rewards, there is no reason to engage with either system. The new seasonal splinters, which are meant to cheap D4 Gold be a power creep feature for jewelry, did not drop during testing, raising questions about how players will obtain them.
